Isononanol (INA) is the common name of a mixture of isomeric chemical compounds from the group of primary C9 alcohols , consisting mainly of 3,5,5-trimethyl-1-hexanol , isomeric dimethyl-1-heptanols and isomeric methyl-1-octanols (e.g. 7-methyloctan-1-ol ), the exact composition varying depending on the starting materials, the manufacturing process used, the reaction conditions and the purification method.

Extraction and presentation

Isononanol is obtained by hydroformylating a C 8 -rich olefin mixture .

Evonik operates the world's largest INA plant with a capacity of 400,000 t in the Marl Chemical Park . In October 2015, BASF and Sinopec opened a 180,000 t plant in Maoming , which is operated by a joint venture (BASF MPCC Company Limited).

use

INA is used as a raw material for the production of diisononyl phthalate (DINP). This phthalate plasticizer with a higher molecular weight than DEHP or DIDP has a better toxicological profile than the latter.
