It's Alive is a live album by the American punk band Ramones . It was in on 31 December 1977 and 1 January 1978 London concert hall Rainbow Theater added. After the four previous studio albums, It's Alive was the band 's first release of live recordings.

History of origin

It's Alive documents the Ramones' third tour of London - after previous appearances in July 1976 and June 1977. The punk bands The Rezillos and Generation X played in the opening act for these New Year's and New Year's appearances . At that time, inspired by the first Ramones tour there, a punk scene had already established itself in England.

The Ramones recordings were initially only released outside the USA as a double LP in 1979 ; the US publication did not take place until the 1990s. The album contains 28 tracks, which can also be found on the band's first three studio albums. Played at typical punk speed, the entire record has a playing time of less than an hour. Sometimes there are hardly any pauses between the individual tracks, only the “one-two-three-four!” Typical of Ramones concerts announces a new title.

Thus, It's Alive , the first official documentation of the essential difference between Ramones studio and live recordings: Tempo. The Ramones always played their repertoire much faster during live performances than in the studio. They had the ambition to put as many songs as possible in half an hour. Drummer and producer Tommy Ramone said:

“When we played live, we just played them faster because we felt them faster. We had to consciously slow them down in the studio. "
(German: "Live we played them [the songs] faster because we felt they were faster. In the studio we had to consciously slow them down.")

One example among many is the playing time of the piece Judy Is A Punk : while the playing time of the track on the debut album was specified as 1 min., 32 seconds, it is already 1 min., On this live album, recorded almost two years later, 14 seconds down. On the live album Loco Live , published in 1991, the length of the piece was only 1 min., 7 sec. (All comparisons refer to the respective CD editions).

The title of the album is reminiscent of the 1974 horror film The Cradle of Evil directed by Larry Cohen , in the original English-language title It's Alive .

In autumn 2007, almost thirty years after the concert, film recordings of fourteen songs from the Ramones' It's Alive New Year's Eve appearance were released on DVD for the first time. These recordings prove that Joey Ramone's vocals on the album were subsequently improved or re-recorded using overdubs .
