Ivan Žužek
Ivan Žužek SJ (born September 2, 1924 in Ljubljana , † January 31, 2004 in Soriano nel Cimino ) was a Yugoslav or Slovenian Roman Catholic theologian , priest and canon lawyer .
Live and act
Ivan Žužek fled to England as a young man from Slovenia , which was occupied by the National Socialists , but was forced to return to Eastern Europe by the British authorities . On the journey he entered the Jesuit order on November 1, 1945 in Lonigo ( Italy ). There he took his first vows in 1947 and studied philosophy in the order's study house in Gallarate . He then completed his theology studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and the Terziat in Rathfarnham Castle in Ireland . He changed from the Latin to the Byzantine Slavonic rite and was ordained a deacon in 1954 and a priest in 1955.
After further studies in 1957 at the Pontifical Oriental Institute and then again at the Gregoriana. In 1963 he took perpetual vows and in 1964 earned a doctorate in canon law . In 1967 he became a full professor of canon law at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, where he was also rector from 1967 to 1973 , and taught there until 1996 and from 1998 until the end of his life.
When the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium was set up in June 1973 , he was appointed Secretary General and continued this function after the promulgation of the Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium (CCEO) when the commission was dissolved. In early 1991 he was appointed advisor to the Pontificium Consilium de Legum Textibus . Until his retirement in June 1995, he served as Undersecretary of State in this council. However, he continued to serve as an advisor to the same council as well as to the Congregation for the Oriental Churches .
