Wolfgang F. Rothe (born July 16, 1967 in Marburg ) is a German Roman Catholic priest , theologian and canon lawyer . He is also known as the "Whiskey Vicar" because of his events and publications on the subject of whiskey spirituality .

Life

youth

Rothe comes from the parish of St. Heribert in Hallenberg , but grew up in the neighboring Bromskirchen , where he also attended elementary school. He graduated from high school Edertalschule in Frankenberg (Eder) in 1987 with the Abitur.

theologian

He completed his studies in Catholic theology at the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg and at the Catholic University of Eichstätt in 1993 with a diploma and in 1994 with a licentiate . He was ordained a deacon in 1995 and a priest in 1996 . He then worked as a chaplain in Weitra until 1999 . Rothe was a long-time member and curate of the angel work-related Catholic Scouting Society of Europe .

He then studied canon law at the Pontifical University of Santa Croce , which is under the direction of the Opus Dei personal prelature , where he received his doctorate in canon law in 2002. Relator ( doctoral supervisor ) was Joseph Ratzinger's private secretary at the time , Georg Gänswein .

Since 2002 he has been secretary and advisor for questions of canon law to the Bishop of St. Pölten , Kurt Krenn , as well as lecturer for canon law at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Pölten , from 2003 also Subregens at the seminary there .

In July 2004 he resigned from this office after he was accused of being jointly responsible for various grievances in the St. Pölten seminary. The measures subsequently taken by Krenn's successor Klaus Küng and confirmed by the Vatican in 2008 are based on the fact that “neither state nor church investigations indicate the conduct of Dr. Rothe revealed that this should be punished ”. Rothe then moved to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising ; He is currently active as parish vicar in the Munich Parish Association of Perlach.

In 2013 Rothe received his doctorate in theology from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich; The first reviewer ( doctoral supervisor ) was Stephan Haering , the second reviewer was Andreas Wollbold . According to the university, the “certificate of non-objection from the home pastor about the applicant's faith and character attitude” was issued by the Bishop of St. Pölten, Klaus Küng .

In 2019 Rothe filed a complaint against Küng for attempted sexual assault against his person in 2004, prior to which Küng had forcibly administered a psychotropic drug from the group of benzodiazepines . Küng rejected the allegations and stated that he reserved the right to take legal action against untruthful allegations. The criminal investigations against Küng were discontinued in 2019 due to the statute of limitations . Church proceedings against Küng in the Vatican are still pending (as of January 2020).

Theologically, Rothe positioned itself in the 2010s and 2020s through criticism of the church's rejection of marriage for all and of the “excessive and excessive celibacy ”.

"Whiskey Vicar"

Rothe is an expert in Scottish whiskey and is known for combining this knowledge with spiritual topics in lectures and publications as well as on radio and television.

Since 2015 he has been organizing so-called “whiskey pilgrimages” to Scotland in collaboration with the Bavarian Pilgrims Office ; in doing so, places are headed for which are important for both the iro-Scottish whiskey culture and the iro-Scottish Christianity.

Also once a year he has been organizing a church service in Munich since 2016, which is musically designed with bagpipes and organ; several hundred people regularly take part. The service in 2018 was broadcast live on the Munich church radio.

He is part of the team of authors for the largest German-language specialist magazine for whiskey, Der Whiskey-Ambassador ; In it he has his own section entitled “Search for traces”, and he also writes regularly in the “Mystery Distillery Check” and “Taste Notes” sections.

At the beginning of 2019, the Hammelburg pastor Thomas Eschenbach made headlines when he offered "whiskey retreats" for men, citing Rothe .
