Günther Walter, a founder of the KPE, federal field master from 1976 to 2005 and author of several KPE publications

Günther Walter (* 1934 ) is a German boy scout . Together with Andreas Hönisch, he is the founder of the European Catholic Scouting Association in Germany and Austria .

Life

Günther Walter joined the “Austrian Scouts” in Salzburg in 1946 at the age of twelve and later became field master there. In September 1954 in Germany he made the Knight's Promise of the German Scout Society of St. Georg in the St. Leonhard Church in Frankfurt. He later acquired the Woodbadge and worked in the state leadership of the Diocese of Mainz .

Co-founder of the European Catholic Scouting Association (KPE)

On February 15, 1976, Walter and Andreas Hönisch founded the Catholic Scouting Association of Europe (KPE) in Fortbach near Gießen. It was mainly people who came together here who did not agree with the programmatic innovations within the German Scouting Association Saint George in the 1970s. The weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit states that the founding of the KPE by Günther Walter and Andreas Hönisch had one main reason: “The aversion to the spirit of 1968, which from their point of view also led to 'lazy' compromises with the zeitgeist in Catholic youth associations would have". Among other things, it disrupted the coeducation that was introduced around the same time as the student movement, i.e. the common upbringing of boys and girls, as well as reformist and emancipatory currents.

Children and adolescents in the KPE are also currently listed in special girls and boys groups. Walter takes the view that it is most important that everyone in the KPE "aligns their life compass and always realigns it to Jesus Christ and his Holy Mother". The pack is a place for the wolves where they can get to know Jesus as their best friend. The pack of wolves is like a second family for the children. Of course, the pack does not replace the right family, the scouting is an additional offer and complement. The basic program of the Catholic Scouting Society of Europe states that man was created to praise God in prayer and active love, to show him reverence and to serve in order to contribute to the building of the kingdom of God. The aim is "holistic education for Christian personalities". The KPE places itself - according to its self-image - under the special protection of the Blessed Mother and consecrates itself to her. The Catholic Scouting Union of Europe states in its support text for the Mission Manifesto that it has the goal that "Mission becomes priority number 1". The KPE was repeatedly suspected of having fundamentalist and sect-like structures.

In the autumn of 2003, Günther Walter - at that time Federal Field Master of the KPE - referred in an article to the anti-Semitic book The Frankfurter Schule and its corrosive effects by the NPD politician Rolf Kosiek , published by Hohenrain Verlag . In 2003, the Weltenburg abbot Thomas Niggl OSB supported the right-wing extremist German study community in an article in the quarterly magazine of the Catholic Scouts of Europe (KPE) by adopting and disseminating the DSG's political theses on Germany.

The ARD magazine Monitor reported on it in 2004. In the summer of 2004, the German Bishops' Conference distanced itself from the KPE, according to the ARD program Monitor . The editorial team received the answer that the KPE is not an “officially recognized youth association”.

Hans-Gerd Jaschke from the Berlin School of Economics and Law stated in a monitor broadcast in 2004 that he had found references to Christian fundamentalism, ethnic nationalism and anti-Semitic allusions in KPE publications . He was referring to the KPE magazine pathfinder Mariens , in which the Benedictine Thomas Niggl, a member of the Engelwerk , had claimed in spring 2003 as a guest author on the subject of demographic change: “One cannot doubt that the German people in his biological-ethnic existence and its cultural religious identity is seriously threatened ”. Jaschke explained: "One must clearly emphasize that the latter two parts [...] are congruent with modern right-wing radicalism". In the same article, Niggl disseminated theses of the right-wing extremist German study community , which he praised as "valuable suggestions". In the program, previous and then members also expressed themselves.

At the end of 2011, the KPE took a position on the various allegations. Your federal management expressly distanced itself from right-wing extremist ideas and anti-Semitism. In religious questions, special doctrines that deviate from the general doctrine of the church are fundamentally rejected for them, as well as pressure and coercion as pedagogical methods of conveying the faith. Connections to the Engelwerk - both organizational and content-related - were emphatically denied. The accusation of anti-Semitism had previously been confirmed by a court in Vienna and taken up again by the German news magazine Der Spiegel along with the classification of the KPE as “fundamentalist”.

Günther Walter stated on March 7, 2017, referring to his recommendation of the book, which is considered to be right-wing extremist, that the reference to Kosiek had got into the text due to his negligence. He only read parts of the book; In his opinion, the chapter on the history of the Frankfurt School contained a few pages with “interesting factual information”; the author's background was unknown to him. The article by Niggl was taken over by the editorial team in 2003 because of time pressure without checking the content and in ignorance of the German study community. Walter apologizes to the KPE and the readers of the Scouts of Mary and expressly distances himself from right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic ideas. The statement is no longer available on the kpe.de website, which was revised in autumn 2017. In the said Walter chapter Kosiek took several times for incitement convicted Holocaust deniers Udo Walendy into custody and referred to the serious historical research as "re-education prevailing opinion." The website of the German Study Association, which identified Rolf Kosiek as a member of its executive committee, was online as early as 2001; the 2001 report on the protection of the constitution, which has been available on the Internet since 2002, mentions Kosiek's book under “Right-wing extremist efforts”. Walter's article, in which Kosiek's book is recommended, continued to circulate on the Internet (as of October 2018).

The KPE, which was co-founded by Günther Walter, is presented in the specialist literature as an elitist group that wants to lead the Catholic Church back to a conservative course. It positions itself against the relaxation of the Second Vatican Council . According to the KPE, the Church, like the rest of the Western world, is suffering from a moral decline. The apocalypse threatens as punishment.

Activity in the Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d'Europe (UIGSE-FSE)

Günther Walter was deputy to the national field champion and vice-president of the Union Internationale des Guides et Scouts d'Europe (UIGSE-FSE). This refers to the original ideas of Baden-Powell and rejects large parts of the modernizations since 1960. One focus of the work is religious education. The UIGSE advocates a gender-specific upbringing and relies on the “differentiated upbringing of girls and boys within the different groups as an essential point of their pedagogy”. The UIGSE sees itself as a Catholic association, which in certain cases also accepts associations of other Christian denominations .

Activity as a teacher and school director

Günther Walter worked as a civil servant in higher education in the teaching post as senior studies director (OStD) and for 15 years was the school director of the Heinrich von Gagern grammar school in Frankfurt am Main . He started in this position on August 28, 1984 and was passed on June 23, 1999. The farewell greeting from the Hessian Ministry of Culture and the State Education Office followed two days later.

Walter was a member of the Hessischer Philologenverband eV , a rather conservative association for high school teachers.
