Ivan Calin ( Russian Иван Петрович Калин / Iwan Petrowitsch Kalin ) (born March 10, 1935 in Plopi , Rîbnița district; † January 2, 2012 in Chișinău ) was a politician of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in the Moldovan SSR and the Partidul Comuniștilor din Republica Moldova (PCRM) in the Republic of Moldova .

Life

Professional and political career in the Moldovan SSR

After attending school, Calin joined the Red Army in 1953 and became a member of the CPSU in 1955. After studying agricultural sciences at the Agronomic Institute Michail Wassiljewitsch Frunze in Chișinău, he became an agronomist in 1960, as well as vice-president and party secretary for the organization of the Viața Nouă collective farm , before becoming an instructor in the organizational department of the Central Committee (ZK) of the Moldovan Communist Party in 1963 . In 1965 he was appointed First Secretary of the Communist Party in Călărași Rajon and held this position until 1971, where he studied between 1967 and 1969 at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow .

After he was head of the Central Committee's Department of Agriculture between 1971 and 1976, he became Secretary of the Central Committee in 1976 and thus belonged to the highest party hierarchy in the Communist Party of the Moldovan SSR. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Moldovan Communist Party for several years and, between 1967 and 1990, a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan SSR.

On April 10, 1980, he was elected as the successor to Chiril Iliașenco as chairman of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan SSR and thus de facto as president of this Union republic . At the same time he was a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU between 1981 and 1990 and a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 1980 to 1992 .

As the successor to Ion Ustian , he finally became Prime Minister of the Moldovan SSR as Chairman of the Council of Ministers on December 24, 1985 and held this office until he was replaced on January 10, 1990 by Petru Pascari , who held this office from 1970 to 1976.

For his services to the Moldavian SSR and the USSR he was honored with the Order of Lenin , the Order of the October Revolution and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .

Political career in the Republic of Moldova

At the end of the Soviet Union he was a graduate of the Diplomatic Academy in Moscow in April 1990 and then until 1995 counselor at the embassy in Romania .

He then became involved in the politics of the Republic of Moldova, which was founded on August 27, 1991, and was elected for the first time as a member of the Parliament of Moldova as a candidate for the PCMR in the elections on March 22, 1998 , to which he was a member until 2010. At the same time he was a substitute member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe between June 1998 and January 2000 . For his political merits he was awarded the Ordinul Republicii on March 10, 2005 by President Vladimir Voronin .

As the successor to Marian Lupu , he was President of Parliament for one week between May 5 and May 12, 2009. After the parliamentary elections on July 29, 2009 , Calin, who was also a member of the PCMR Central Committee, became the age-president of the constituent session of the parliament on August 28, 2009.

A sharp contrast between the communists (PCRM) and the other parties represented in parliament became clear. At first it was not possible to agree on an agenda. The communists requested that the session be suspended for several days. In his capacity as senior president, he then announced that the meeting would be postponed to September 4th. The members of the PCRM left the room. The remaining MPs, however, continued the session and elected the party leader of the Partidul Liberal , Mihai Ghimpu , as the new speaker of parliament. The communists protested sharply against what they regarded as a violation of the law by the other parties.
