Ivan Ergić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Иван Ергић ; born January 21, 1981 in Šibenik , SR Croatia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Yugoslav or Serbian football player . He is also a citizen of Australia .

Career

Ergić was born on the Dalmatian coast in Šibenik and lived there in the village of Gaćelezi. However, in his early years he moved to Perth , Western Australia . After completing the Australian Institute of Sport sponsorship program , Ivan Ergić began his athletic career at Perth Glory . In 2000 he moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin , from where he was sold to FC Basel for the second half of the 2000/01 season .

From June 2004 Ergić had to be treated for a long time for depression in the Psychiatric University Clinic Basel . His further career as a soccer player was being questioned at this point. FC Basel stuck to him and did not terminate the employment relationship. From 2005 he was back on the field and was appointed team captain by coach Christian Gross for the 2006/07 season , an office he voluntarily gave up at the end of the 2007/08 season. He played 282 games in Basel and scored 49 goals. His contract, which expired at the end of the 2008/09 season, was not extended when Christian Gross changed coach to Thorsten Fink from FC Basel. Then Ergić moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to Bursaspor . With his new club he was able to win the Turkish championship title in his starting season. It was the first championship title in the club history of Bursaspor. Ergić came to Bursaspor on 58 appearances and scored 9 goals. After his contract expired on May 31, 2011, he ended his career.

National team

On May 15, 2006 he was appointed to the squad of the former Serbian-Montenegrin national team for the soccer World Cup in Germany . He played a part in the second group game against Argentina (0: 6) and played through 90 minutes in the third group game against Ivory Coast (2: 3). Ultimately, you failed as the last place in the group stage.
