Ivana Hoffmann
Ivana Hoffmann (born September 1, 1995 in Emmerich , Germany ; † March 7, 2015 in Tell Tamer , Syria ) was a German communist from Duisburg . As a member of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Northern Kurdistan-Turkey (MLKP) at the side of members of the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG) and Women's Defense Units (YPJ), she was defeated on March 7, 2015 under the name Avaşin Tekoşin Güneş in a battle against armed forces of the Islamic State (IS) killed in Tell Tamer, Syria. She is considered the first German and first foreign woman to be killed in the armed struggle against IS. She was the third person to die in 2015 as a volunteer from the West fighting IS.
Hoffmann was the daughter of a German and a Togolese and until 2014 had attended the twelfth grade of the Aletta Haniel Comprehensive School in the Ruhrort district of Duisburg , which she left without a technical diploma in order to participate in the fight against IS. In Duisburg, the woman was active in the Young Struggle group, which is said to be close to the MLKP. There she has been particularly committed against racism and sexism since she was 13 . She is said to have found out about the MLCP in 2011 and traveled to the Rojava region in 2014 to fight against the Islamic State there.
Death and afterlife
According to the MLCP, which she is said to have joined there, she had already stayed in the "Canton of Cizîrê" for six months and took on various tasks there. According to media reports, she may also have participated in the battle for Kobanê . At the time of her death, she was in Tell Tamer, where fierce fighting between the Kurds and IS is said to have occurred over and over again for weeks. IS is said to have attacked several Christian villages there. Hoffmann died on March 7, 2015 at 3 a.m. local time while successfully defending Tell Tamer. She suffered two gunshot wounds, the second of which was fatal. According to press reports, on March 12, 2015, Hoffmann's body was handed over to her family at the Syrian-Turkish border.
The public prosecutor's office in Duisburg temporarily confiscated the body in order to have it autopsied. The Federal Prosecutor's Office is examining whether it must prosecute the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party (MLKP). It is determined whether supporters of the organization should be charged with membership or support of a foreign terrorist organization. The solidarity committee Ivana Hoffmann rated this process as a "scandal".
On March 14, 2015, a rally followed by a funeral march in memory of Hoffmann was held in Duisburg with participants from the Marxist-Leninist spectrum. Various sources speak of over 500 to 6000 participants. The Hoffmanns family was also present. The march accompanied Hoffmann's coffin from the district court in the Hamborn district to the Iron Street Cemetery in Meiderich , where the woman was buried. In addition to representatives of communist organizations from Germany, Spain and Turkey , high-ranking representatives of the Kurdish freedom movement such as the chairwoman of the HDP Figen Yüksekdağ and Salih Muslim , the chairman of the PYD, spoke at the event .
