The public prosecutor's office in Duisburg is the law enforcement authority responsible for the district of the Duisburg Regional Court . It employs around 250 people (including 64 public prosecutors , 24  public prosecutors , 24  legal clerks and 140 service staff  including law enforcement officers ) in 12 departments (1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3–10) and is managed by Chief Public Prosecutor Horst Bien as the 17th head of the agency .

Special responsibility for shipping matters

The public prosecutor's office in Duisburg has special jurisdiction for shipping matters. The Rhine Shipping and Shipping Court is the District Court of Duisburg-Ruhrort, which is locally responsible for the Rhine from km 650.00 near Bad Honnef - Linz to the German- Dutch border , for the Rhine-Kleve shipping route , for the Rhine-Herne Canal from Rhine up to kilometer point 29.00 near the western border of the city of Herne , for the Wesel-Datteln Canal from the Rhine up to and including the port of the Auguste Victoria colliery and for the Ruhr from the Rhine up to and including the weir at Kemnader See not far from the city limits of the city of Hattingen . The court and thus the Duisburg Public Prosecutor's Office are materially responsible with regard to criminal and administrative fines for acts that are committed on or on the above-mentioned inland waterways in violation of shipping police regulations and which, according to the Courts Constitution Act, belong to the jurisdiction of the district court. The focus is on environmental offenses and the criminal law assessment of ship accidents and accidents .

Preliminary investigation

In 2017, there was a decrease from around 5,000 to 80,300 in the investigation proceedings compared to 2016. Sunken were the practices in economic criminal cases , juvenile delinquency and the burglaries . The investigation into murder and manslaughter had increased from 70 proceedings in 2016 to 112 proceedings in 2017 as well as the proceedings in the area of drug-related crime .

The public prosecutor's office in Duisburg goes back to the public prosecutor's office in Wesel, which had existed since 1849 and was also responsible for Duisburg. Due to the increase in importance and the population growth of Duisburg in the course of the industrialization of the Ruhr area , the public prosecutor's office was relocated to Duisburg on October 1, 1874 and exactly five years later the Duisburg Regional Court was founded. The name is then: Royal Public Prosecutor at the Duisburg Regional Court . For reasons of space, the public prosecutor's office left the district court building and has been based on Koloniestrasse in Duisburg-Neudorf since March 1, 1977 .

One of the best-known incidents under the jurisdiction of the Duisburg public prosecutor was the accident at the 2010 Love Parade .

Others

To combat clan crime , two so-called public prosecutors have been on site in Duisburg-Hamborn , a crime focus , since 2018 . This is intended to intensify networking with the police authorities , but also with other government agencies. The background to this is that there are around 70 clan crime families in Duisburg with around 2,800 people.
