Ivan Ivanovich Martynov ( Russian Иван Иванович Мартынов * 1771 in Perewolotschna ; † October 20 . Jul / 1. November  1833 greg. In St. Petersburg ) was a Ukrainian - Russian classical scholar , botanist and university teachers . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Martinov ".

Life

The priest's son Martynov attended the Poltava Spiritual Seminary (graduated in 1788) and then studied at the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy together with Michail Michailowitsch Speranski and Pyotr Andrejewitsch Slowzow (graduated in 1792). He then worked as a Greek teacher. Then he also taught Latin grammar , poetry and rhetoric . He then entered the service of the Chancellery of the College of Foreign Affairs of the Government in St. Petersburg. In 1796 he began to publish the magazine Musa , in which Gavriil Romanowitsch Derschawin , Michail Michailowitsch Speranski, the princes Lwow , Pyotr Andrejewitsch Slowzow and others worked.

In 1797 Martynov was appointed teacher of Russian language and geography at the Smolny Institute for noble girls. On behalf of Nikolai Nikolajewitsch Novossilzews and Alexander Sergejewitsch Stroganov , Martynov made many translations. In 1803 he became director of the Ministry of Popular Education. He promoted the establishment of many educational institutions, including the education -Institut where he is a aesthetics - Lecture held. 1804-1805 he published the monthly Sewerny Westnik . In 1806 he wrote a social contract on censorship .

Martynov's most important work was the dictionary of botanical terminology and nomenclature published in 1820 . He used Latin and Russian terminology based on French . In the new edition of the work in 1990, the changed authorship of some high-ranking taxa in favor of Martynov was taken into account. Martynow's names are borne by the plant families Asteraceae Martinov ( today attributed to Friedrich von Berchtold and Karel Bořivoj Presl by decision of the ICBN ), Avenaceae Martinov (today considered a synonym of Poaceae ), Andropogonaceae Martinov (today also considered a synonym of Poaceae), Prunaceae Martinov ( is now considered a synonym of Rosaceae ) and Zingiberaceae Martinov .

From 1823 to 1829 Martynow published 26 volumes with translations of the works of the Greek classics Sophocles , Homer , Herodotus , Pindar and others. He added extensive historical and philological explanations to the translations . The verses he translated into prose except the verses of Anacreon , which he in blank verse translated.
