Ján Francisci (1862)

Ján Francisci-Rimavský , actually Ján Francisci (also Janko Francisci ) (born June 1, 1822 in Hnúšťa , Gemer and Kleinhont county ; † March 7, 1905 in Martin , Austria-Hungary ) was a Slovak poet, writer, publicist and politician in 19th century.

Life

Francisci was born into a family of craftsmen. After attending an elementary school in his hometown and a Latin school in Ožďany , he studied at a Protestant lyceum in Leutschau from 1834–39 and then at the one in Pressburg from 1839–43 . There he met the then leader of the Slovak national movement Ľudovít Štúr know and became a representative of his ideology. He finished his law degree at a college in Eperies and became a civil servant. During the revolution of 1848/49 he first organized a “national guard” in Gemer County , which is why he was imprisoned by the Hungarian government in Pleissnitz and Pest (originally sentenced to death). In early 1849, however, an imperial army was able to free him from the Pest prison, and he achieved the rank of captain when he led Slovak volunteer troops.

After the revolution he was first in 1850, a clerk of the county Sohl , 1853-59 Komitatskommissar in Debrecen , 1861-63 editor of the newspaper Pešťbudínske vedomosti . He was instrumental in founding the Matica slovenská association in 1863 and was its lifelong honorary deputy. In November 1864, he was appointed chaplain of Liptov County, but was revoked from this position on September 10, 1865. After the Austro-Hungarian compromise , he retired and became the main inspector of the Slovak high school in Revúca in 1868 , until it was closed in 1875. In 1872 he moved to Martin and stayed there until his death. 1869–1898 Francisci was chairman of a printing company.

He is buried at the Martin National Cemetery.
