János Scitovszky de Nagykér (Slovak Ján (Krstiteľ) Scitovský ) (born November 1, 1785 in Košická Belá in the Kingdom of Hungary (now Slovakia ); † October 19, 1866 in Esztergom ) was a Hungarian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of Gran .

Life

After attending the grammar school in Rožňava (dt. Rosenau) he studied theology and received his doctorate in 1818. On November 5, 1809, he was ordained a priest. On January 21, 1828 he was appointed bishop of Rožňava and consecrated on March 25, 1828. On February 18, 1839, Bishop of Pécs (German: Fünfkirchen). On September 28, 1849 he was appointed Archbishop of Gran .

He first supported the Slovak national movement , but was dubbed a “traitor” by the Hungarian government in 1849 and then turned against this movement.

He is the builder of the Esztergom Basilica. He held the office of Apostolic Administrator in Pécs until the election of his successor György Girk on January 6, 1852. On March 7, 1853 János Scitovszky was from Pope Pius IX. elevated to cardinal with the titular church Santa Croce in Gerusalemme . In 1859 he celebrated his 50th jubilee as a priest. The medal shown here appeared at the time.

He left a considerable fortune (600,000 guilders), some of which was used for charitable purposes.
