The Hochgebirgs-Jägerbataillon 23 is a mountain mobile infantry unit of the Austrian Armed Forces in the federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg . The companies of the Jäger Battalion and the battalion command under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Michael Köck are housed in the Walgau barracks in Bludesch . The 23rd Jäger Battalion was set up in 1999.

Structure and locations

In Bludesch in the Vorarlberg district of Bludenz , the command of the hunter battalion, the headquarters company, the combat support company and the 1st hunter company are housed in the Walgau barracks. Until the restructuring as part of the army reform in 2016, the Pontlatz barracks in Landeck also housed the 2nd and 3rd Jäger companies, which became the 1st and 2nd Jäger companies of the newly established Tyrolean Jäger Battalion 6.

In the course of the army reform in 2016 , the 23rd Jäger Battalion , which was previously subordinate to the 6th Jäger Brigade (which was converted into the Mountain Combat Command ), was assigned directly to the Vorarlberg Military Command. Since October 2018 the High Mountain Jäger Battalion 23 has again been subordinate to the 6th Mountain Brigade - renamed as the area of responsibility in the mountains - and again has a company in the Pontlatz barracks in Landeck .

Areas of responsibility

The soldiers of the Jäger Battalion 23 master all the classic tasks of a Jäger battalion such as the most varied of combat methods. In addition, they specialize in operations in high mountains and in difficult terrain. A large part of the management staff is very familiar with the mountains. Many of the soldiers have completed various alpine courses and are mostly trained mountain guides, mountain guide assistants, high alpinists, army ski instructors and flight rescuers.

One of the main tasks of the Jäger Battalion 23 is the establishment and training of a Jäger company for the mountain mobile cadre presence unit (KPE) of the 6th Mountain Brigade. The task of the battalion in peacetime consists of disaster relief, assistance (especially border security) and missions abroad as well as participation in international exercises

In addition, basic training cycles are carried out at regular intervals in all companies belonging to the battalion for basic military servants who are obliged to do military service. These basic military servants make up the majority of the combat troops and a small part serves as system maintainer. You go through a demanding training in the high mountains. In addition, a lot of emphasis is placed on sport and adventure training.

Currently, one KIOP / KPE platoon is integrated with the 1st Jäger company in Bludesch and the 2nd Jäger company in Landeck.
