József Kovács (hurdler)

József Kovács [ ˈjoːʒɛf ˈkovaːʧ ] (born March 14, 1911 in Budapest , † August 18, 1990 there ) was a Hungarian athlete . With a height of 1.84 m, his competition weight was 75 kg.

József Kovács reached the final in three disciplines at the European Championships in Turin in 1934 . First he won the 110 meter hurdles in 14.8 seconds ahead of the German Erwin Wegner in 14.9 seconds. In the 200-meter run , he finished fourth in 21.7 seconds. With the Hungarian 4 x 100 meter relay , he won silver in 41.4 seconds behind the German relay.

Kovács also started in several disciplines at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. In the 400 meter hurdles he was eliminated in 54.0 seconds in the semifinals. With the 4 x 100 meter relay, he was eliminated in the preliminary run. The Hungarian 4-by-400-meter relay reached the final and finished sixth in 3: 14.8 minutes.

At the European Championships in Paris in 1938 , Kovács was second in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.3 seconds behind the Frenchman Prudent Joye . With the 4 x 100 meter relay, he was eliminated in the preliminary run.

József Kovács set numerous Hungarian records, of which the hurdle records on both courses and the 400-meter record in the 1950s were broken. His record in the 200-meter run was held from 1933 to 1964.
