Jörg Schmidt-Reitwein (born February 21, 1939 in Königs Wusterhausen ) is a German cameraman .

Life

The son of the painter Karl Schmidt-Reitwein and his wife Barbara, née Linde, grew up in Bad Schwartau after their father's death in 1941 . From 1952 he attended the Waldorf School in Rendsburg . In 1957 he began studying physics in Lübeck, which he broke off after four semesters.

In 1959 he moved to Berlin and practiced in the dubbing studio Aer Film / Genschow film as well as in the lab Fikopa. In 1960 he was responsible for the sound engineering for two short films, and in 1961 in the same position for Hansjürgen Pohland's debut feature film Tobby .

In 1961, he hit the headlines when, shortly after the Wall was built, he was caught trying to escape and sentenced by the GDR judiciary as a trafficker and bounty hunter to five years in the Bautzen prison. In 1964 the Federal Republic of Germany was able to buy him out for butter worth 86,000 DM.

Schmidt-Reitwein settled in Munich and was involved in the sound recordings of the films Wilder Reiter GmbH and Alle Jahre again . Since 1965 he has been a camera assistant for several documentaries. In 1968 he repeatedly assisted the cameraman Dietrich Lohmann .

When Lohmann withdrew because of the dangerousness of the recordings in the desert documentary Fata Morgana , Schmidt-Reitwein stepped in, which gave him the breakthrough. He became Werner Herzog's preferred cameraman , but also worked with other New German Film directors such as Werner Schroeter , Alexander Kluge and especially Herbert Achternbusch . He received the Federal Film Prize twice, in 1976 for a heart made of glass and in 1984 for Where the green ants dream .

He was married to Erika Kaul from 1965 to 1972 and became the father of his daughter Iris Maria (* 1966). His son Tobias Lukas (* 1989) comes from his second marriage to Susanne Rupprecht.
