The Jewish cemetery in Nördlingen , a town in the Swabian district of Donau-Ries , is a protected cultural monument and is located on Nähermemminger Weg.

history

In the Middle Ages there were already three Jewish cemeteries , of which there are no more visible traces. After the expulsion in 1506/07, Jews could not settle in Nördlingen again until the 19th century .

In 1877, the Jewish community in Nördlingen again established a cemetery in the vicinity of the municipal cemetery on Nähermemminger Weg and Stegmühlweg. A Tahara house was also built and inaugurated on September 7, 1877. In 1978 the building was demolished because it was in disrepair .

In the 18.68 ares large cemetery there are still about 220 tombstones ( mazewot ). The last burial took place in 1986.

In the cemetery there is a war memorial for the Jewish soldiers who fell in World War I from Nördlingen.

time of the nationalsocialism

The cemetery was partially cleared during the Nazi era . Many tombstones and parts of the cemetery wall were removed and used as building material. In 1947 200 tombstones were erected again.

Commemoration

In the cemetery there is a memorial stone with the inscription: “In honor of the dead and in eternal memory of the Jewish citizens from Nördlingen and the surrounding area, who perished cruelly in the years of persecution from 1933 to 1945. As a warning to us living, to the coming generations as an urgent teaching. Erected in 1979 by the regional association of Jewish religious communities in Bavaria ”.
