Jürgen Köberlein (born November 17, 1958 in Zeulenroda , † December 24, 2006 in Jena ) was a German football player. For FC Carl Zeiss Jena and BSG Wismut Aue , he played in the Oberliga , the top division of football in the GDR .
Athletic career
At the age of 14 Jürgen Köberlein was accepted into the youth department of FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 1972. He played his first games in the men's division from 1976 in the junior league , in which he was a regular player for the Jena team as a defender and midfielder until 1980. In 1978 he played his first league game with the first team of FC Carl Zeiss. In the encounter between Rot-Weiß Erfurt and FCC (2: 1), he came on as a substitute for right winger Thomas Töpfer in the 46th minute . In the season 1979/80 Köberlein came to three other short appearances in the league team.
Then Köberlein was sorted out at FC Carl Zeiss Jena and delegated to the second-rate GDR league club BSG Wismut Gera . There he was able to assert himself as a regular player, mainly playing as a defender. Of the 22 league games in the 1980/81 season, he only missed one encounter and scored six goals.
For the 1981/82 season Köberlein made another change and joined the upper division BSG Wismut Aue. He stayed in Aue for two seasons in which he played all 52 possible league games. In the game Wismut - Sachsenring Zwickau (6-0) he scored the only upper league of his career on September 25, 1982. In 1982 the trained locksmith started studying to become a sports teacher.
During his time in Aue, Köberlein was also appointed to the squad of the GDR's Olympic team. With her he played a test match against the Soviet Olympic team on April 13, 1983 . In the 3-1 away defeat in Charkow , Köberlein was initially the right defender in the starting line-up before being replaced by Gerald Cramer from Magdeburg in the 75th minute .
Through his successful appearance at Wismut Aue, FC Carl Zeiss Jena became aware of his former player again and brought him back to his league team at the beginning of the 1983/84 season. Köberlein, however, could not meet the expectations placed in him. In the first season he was used in his usual position as a right-back in only seven league games. However, he also played three games in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup - the two first-round games against Icelandic representatives ÍBV Vestmannaeyja (0-0, 3-0) and the first leg of the second round against Sparta Rotterdam (1-1)
For the season 1984/85 he was transferred to the squad of the second team playing in the GDR league, with whom he had made the leap into second division as Gera district champion over the promotion round . From November 1, 1984 he was drafted for military service in the National People's Army . Before that, he had played a league game as a libero . After completing his military service, for which no missions in a higher-class team of the Army Sports Association Forward are noted, he came to the end of the 1985/86 season to two missions in the 2nd team. For 1986/87 the FC Carl Zeiss Köberlein planned again for the big league. Coach Lothar Kurbjuweit used him in the first three league games as a midfielder, but after that he only played three times in the second team.
In December 1986, before the winter break, Köberlein moved to the senior league relegated BSG Sachsenring Zwickau. There he was used in the last 13 league games of the season as a libero. In the first half of the 1987/88 season he played the first nine point games as a Libero, before moving to East German league club BSG Robotron Sömmerda . In Sömmerda he now settled down and played 63 games of the 85 league games played by 1990. In 1988/89 he celebrated his highest scoring season with five goals. On the 24th matchday of the 1989/90 season Köberlein was injured so badly that he could not be used until the end of the season. Although the successor club to the BSG, FSV Robotron, named Jürgen Köberlein for his league team for the 1990/91 season, the now 30-year-old was no longer used there. He did not appear again later in higher-class football.
Further career
According to information on the Internet, Köberlein was the managing director of two fitness studios in Jena after his active career as a footballer . He died on Christmas Eve 2006 at the age of 48.
