Jürgen Runge (painter)

Jürgen Runge (born March 19, 1929 in Stettin ; † June 3, 1992 in Cismar ) was a German painter.

The Runge family came to Kiel from Pomerania , where their parents opened an art shop in 1945.

As early as 1948 Jürgen Runge received a scholarship from the state of Schleswig-Holstein to attend the Art Academy in Plön and then studied with Daniel Frettelier in Paris (where he received the City of Paris Art Prize in 1956) and as a master student with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg . He then traveled through Europe with Roma for some time and temporarily settled in Ibiza from 1970 to 1975 . He became known through international exhibitions, which enabled him to make a living from painting and to go on study trips. From the mid-1970s he lived in Ostholstein (Schleswig-Holstein) - first in Neukirchen and from 1978 in Cismar , where he and his wife Doris Runge leased the “White House” of the Cismar monastery and set up his studio there.

The pictures from Jürgen Runge's early time are realistic / naturalistic . Jürgen Runge's painting style later changed significantly due to the spatula technique adopted by Oskar Kokoschka - whereby he developed his mixture of elements of impressionism and expressionism in his own - he used strong colors with a powerful application of paint, which are characterized by a Mediterranean brightness. His pictures show landscapes and localities, nudes and still lifes, whereby the motifs are often taken from his Holstein homeland in the different seasons and are depicted by him with clear severity without heaviness.

Today his pictures are in museums and private collections.

Marriages

Jürgen Runge was married to the poet Elisabeth von Ulmann (previously Elisabeth Meyer-Runge) and (from 1967 to 1981) in his third marriage to the writer Doris Runge (* 1943 in Carlow / Mecklenburg ).
