Jürgen Schutte

Jürgen Schutte (born July 21, 1938 in Fürstenwalde / Spree ; † October 19, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German literary scholar and professor of German studies.

Life

Jürgen Schutte studied German , philosophy and history at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Zurich . In 1971 he completed his studies with the dissertation Schympff red. Early forms of bourgeois agitation in Thomas Murner's Great Lutheran Fool . From 1976 to 1978 he was a lecturer at Aalborg Universitetscenter (Denmark). His habilitation followed in 1981, and from 1992 he taught as a professor at the Free University of Berlin , at universities in Beijing and Bangkok and at Stanford College in Berlin. Since 2003 he was retired , his farewell lecture was called: “Truth and Method. Try to organize my thoughts about the usefulness of literature ”.

Schutte was primarily concerned with German literature from 1870 to the present, with a particular focus on the period after 1945. His introduction to literary interpretation saw numerous new editions and is considered a standard work. Schutte has made a particular contribution as editor of the handwritten notebooks by Peter Weiss (complete edition on CD-ROM, together with Wiebke Amthor and Jenny Willner, the edition is dedicated to Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss), the Copenhagen journal by Peter Weiss and the correspondence Peter Weiss - Manfred Haiduk (both with Rainer Gerlach ) and the New Berlin Edition of the Aesthetics of Resistance as the “definitive version”. From 2000 to 2006 he was Vice Chairman of the International Peter Weiss Society , of which he was an honorary member.

Jürgen Schutte also worked as a curator. In 1988 he curated the exhibition Poets and Judges. Group 47 and German post-war literature at the Academy of Arts in Berlin (West), 1991 together with Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss the exhibition Peter Weiss. Paintings, drawings, collages, film, theater, literature, politics at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin (West) 1991 and at the Moderna Museet Stockholm 1991.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he took on positions in the university section of the  Education and Science Union (GEW). Schutte was also a member of Attac's scientific advisory board and was a co-founder of the Association of Common Property in Citizens' Hands (GiB).

On Schutte's 80th birthday, Jörg Magenau praised in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that the jubilee had “always focused on the useful and useful in his academic work.” Jürgen Schutte's Peter Weiss collection is in the literary archive of the Academy of Arts .

Rubble's grave is in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin .
