The JŽ class 802 was a diesel multiple unit series of the Yugoslavian Railways ( Jugoslovenske Železnice ) and was produced between 1963 and 1969 by the Yugoslav company Ðuro Ðaković . The series produced for the narrow-gauge railway network was sold to Portugal in 1980 and is called the CP series 9700 there . After a few years in operation, the Portuguese State Railways had the cars converted; the conversions are referred to as the 9400 and 9500 series.

Yugoslavia

JŽ 802 in 1968 in Čapljina

The Yugoslav Railways procured twelve four-part diesel multiple units between 1963 and 1969 in order to modernize operations on the extensive narrow-gauge railway network (with 760 mm gauge) in the center of the country. The cars produced by Ðuro Đaković in Slavonski Brod were mainly used on the routes to Dubrovnik, Nikšić, Sarajevo, Titovo Užice ( Bosnian Eastern Railway ) and to Foča and Priboj. The cars had the designations 802-001 to 024 (with driver's cab) and 802-501 to 524 (without driver's cab).

At the end of the 1970s, the Sarajevo Railway Directorate decided to close the Bosnian narrow-gauge network. There was no further use for the railcars. For this reason, the JŽ sold ten of the units to the Portuguese Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses (CP).

When they arrived in Portugal, the CP had them re-tracked to meter gauge in the workshops in Guifões (near Porto) in order to be able to use them on the northern Portuguese narrow-gauge lines. They were given the numbers 9701 to 9720. The railcars were mainly used on the Linha do Corgo , Linha do Tua and on the routes of the Vouga network ( Linha do Vouga , Ramal de Aveiro , Ramal de Viseu ).

However, both performance and reliability did not meet the expectations of the CP. The transmission in particular suffered from malfunctions, which led the passengers to christen the car “Xepa”, based on the stormy character of the Dona Xepa from the Brazilian telenovela of the same name. The inward-opening doors occasionally caused injuries to passengers.

For this reason, CP in 1992/93 commissioned its subsidiary EMEF with a comprehensive renovation program. The modernized railcars were given the designation 9400 .
