The IIla4 series were Klose support tender locomotives with three coupling axles and Klose steering mechanism in Bosnian gauge of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB, from 1895) and their two predecessors, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian State Railways (BHStB, 1884 to 1895) and the kuk Bosnabahn (kkBB, 1879 to 1895). Similar locomotives procured the Royal Saxon State Railways as a genus III K .

For the development of the areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina occupied by Austria from 1878 onwards by the Berlin Congress , narrow-gauge railways with 760 mm gauge were built, which, due to the difficult terrain, had steep gradients and narrow curves with radii of up to 33 meters. The two-axle tank locomotives were no longer able to cope with the steadily increasing traffic. The demanding track conditions led to the development and procurement of locomotives with Klose steering axles , which impressed with their good arc travel.

In 1885 the Munich plant of the Krauss & Co. company developed a three-coupling locomotive with a single-axle support tender for the Bosnabahn. The machine built in the Krauss plant in Linz proved its worth and the Krauss plant in Linz delivered another 33 identical vehicles to the Bosnabahn and BHStB between 1887 and 1896.

The machine had an outer frame and inner cylinder with external slide boxes for Stephenson - control . The radial adjustment of the first and third coupling axles took place via the support tender, which also carried the coal bunker. The water supplies were taken in side boxes.

The two outer of the three coupled axles were designed as Klose steering axles. They were adjusted radially by the movements of the single-axis Klose support tender , which rotated around a pin in front of the fire box , using a lever mechanism. This resulted in the locomotive being able to move freely in curves (contemporary curve movement). The lengthening and shortening of the coupling rod caused by the radial adjustment of the two outer wheel sets was carried out using a so-called differential head. It was located above the central coupling axle and was connected to the axle bearings of the steering axles with a parallelogram link. The angle of the differential head changed depending on the rotation of the steering axles, resulting in the right length of the coupling rod.

Despite the multi-part drive and running gear, the locomotives have proven themselves well, so that additional locomotives with Klose steering axles have been ordered.
