life and work
JD'Okhai Ojeikere, also called Ojomu Emai, was born in 1930 in a rural area in southwestern Nigeria. He lived and worked in Lagos, Nigeria.
In 1950, at the age of twenty, JD'Okhai Ojeikere began taking pictures with a Kodak Brownie D , although this was by no means common in his village. A cousin introduced him to the basics of photography and he continued to develop his talent as an autodidact .
Ojeikere worked as an assistant in the photo laboratory of the State Ministry of Information in Ibadan from 1954.
In 1961, after Nigeria's decolonization , he became a photographer at Nigeria's first television station, Television House in Ibadan, a division of West Nigerian Broadcasting . In 1963 he moved to Lagos and worked for West Africa Publicity until 1975 .
Ojeikere has been a member of the Nigerian Arts Council since 1967 .
Hairstyles is the most popular series with over a thousand photos. It is a documentation of the hairstyles and headgear of Nigerian women over a period of about 40 years. He took these sculptures for one day at weddings, on the street, in offices or at parties.
