Jacob Christian Friedrich Otto (born March 2, 1795 in Magdeburg ; † August 9, 1869 there ) was a Prussian major general and director of the powder factory in Spandau .

Life

origin

His parents were Johann Christian Otto and his wife Dorothea Luise, née Dechand. His father was a master turner and then a messenger master at the regional and municipal court in Magdeburg.

Military career

Otto attended the cathedral high school in Magdeburg and the art school . Magdeburg was occupied by the French, Otto was drafted and came to the office of the engineer colonel Baraillon to draw. When the fortress was handed over to Prussia in 1814, Otto was released again and now hired himself as a private tutor .

On April 22, 1815, he joined the 7th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army as a gunner and was promoted to second lieutenant by early July 1817 . On April 11, 1818, he joined the 3rd Artillery Brigade as a department adjutant and, from October 1819, was sent to the General War School for two years for further training . In 1821 he was appointed assistant to the artillery examination commission . In mid-October 1822 Otto returned to the 3rd Artillery Brigade as an adjutant and rose to prime lieutenant at the end of April 1831 . On June 30, 1831, he was again commanded as an assistant to the artillery examination commission. On May 29, 1837 he became a member of the Artillery Examination Commission and the Guards Artillery Brigade aggregated . Promoted to captain on October 2, 1837 , he was assigned to the Artillery Department of the War Ministry on July 2, 1840 . From there, on November 21, 1844, he was ordered to work as director of the powder factory in Neisse. Under position à la suite of the Guards Artillery Regiment, Otto advanced to major on December 24, 1850 . On June 22, 1852, he was transferred to Spandau as director of the powder factory, where he led experiments on the use of gun cotton . These attempts were given up after a self-ignition on December 4, 1862. On October 15, 1856 he became lieutenant colonel and on March 5, 1857 with the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus excellent. On May 31, 1859 he was given the character of a colonel. On February 1, 1861, he was posted to Austria for four months to observe the use of gun cotton there. During this time he received the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class. After his return he got his patent as colonel on October 18, 1861 . On June 18, 1865 he was transferred to the officers of the army while retaining his position with the character of major general. With the award of the Red Eagle Order III. Otto married Pauline Susanne Wilhelmine Auguste Niesner (1804–1876), a daughter of the sculptor and police commissioner Carl August Niesner, in Magdeburg on April 21, 1830.
