Jacqueline de Romilly
Jacqueline Worms de Romilly (born March 26, 1913 in Chartres , † December 18, 2010 in Paris ), née Jacqueline David , was a French philologist and a member of the Académie française . She is known for her work on ancient Greek culture and language, especially Thucydides .
Life
Jacqueline David came from a family of the educated French-Jewish middle class. She was the daughter of Maxime David, a French professor of philosophy, and Jeanne Malvoisin (as a writer: Jeanne Maxime-David). Her father fell in World War I. Jacqueline David went to school at the Lycée Molière in Paris. In 1930 she won an honorable mention ( laureate ) in Latin and second prize in Greek in the nationwide Concours général of French grammar schools . After the two-year preparatory literary studies ( Classes préparatoires littéraires ) at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand , she was admitted to the École normal supérieure on Rue d'Ulm in Paris in 1933 . As a student of Paul Mazon , she received the Agrégation for classical literary studies ( lettres classiques ) in 1936 .
In 1940 she married Michel Worms de Romilly, from whom she divorced in 1973. In 1947 she received her doctorate in literary studies.
After a few years teaching at the grammar school, she was appointed to a professorship at the University of Lille in 1949 . In 1957 she was appointed professor at the Sorbonne . In 1973, he was appointed to the chair of Greek moral philosophy and politics ( formation de la pensée morale et politique ) at the Collège de France . She was the first female professor at this institution. In 1975 she was appointed to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres to succeed Pierre Chantraine ; She was also the first female member of this institution. In 1987 she was elected President. In 1988 she was appointed to the Académie française as the second woman after Marguerite Yourcenar .
In 1995 she received Greek citizenship; In 2000 she was appointed ambassadrice de l'hellénisme ( ambassadrice de l'hellénisme ). In 1940 she converted to Catholicism .
She was chairman and honorary chairwoman of the humanistic association Guillaume Budé . In addition, she was a corresponding member of numerous foreign scientific societies and academies, including the Academy of Athens , the British Academy , the Austrian Academy of Sciences , the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Danish Academy of Sciences , the Netherlands Academy of Sciences , the American Philosophical Society (1978), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1988), and many others.
