Jacques B. Hess

Jacques-Bernard Hess (* 23. June 1926 in Saigon , Vietnam ; † 9. December 2011 in Bonzac , Gironde ) was a French jazz - bassist , author , translator , music critic and historian .

Live and act

Hess was active in the French Resistance during World War II ; towards the end of the war he was interned in the Buchenwald concentration camp . He later received the Knight of the Legion of Honor . After the end of the war he worked as a bass player in the Paris jazz scene a. a. with Claude Bolling , Jack Diéval and Sonny Gray . In 1959 he briefly represented Jimmy Woode in the Duke Ellington Orchestra during a tour of France; He also accompanied Bud Powell and Barney Wilen on a tour of Italy in 1961, and also Milt Jackson in Paris. In 1963 he directed his own ensemble with René Thomas , Sonny Gray, Charles Saudrais and Henri Renaud ; He also worked on Eric Dolphy's last studio recordings in Paris on June 11, 1964 with Jack Diéval, Donald Byrd and Nathan Davis , which were released under the title Last Recordings . Then he worked in the trio of Larry Young ( In Paris: The ORTF Recordings ). In 1965 he accompanied the singer Blossom Dearie in the Diéval band . After Tom Lord , he was involved in 27 recordings between 1956 and 1965 as a bass player.

In his work as an author, music critic and historian, Hess wrote regularly in Jazz Magazine and Jazz Hot . He taught history of jazz at the Sorbonne in Paris , interviewed Thelonious Monk for French television and was co-editor of the Encyclopedie Jazz Hot (1989/90). Hess also worked as a translator of texts from the jazz area such as Wait until Dark: Jazz and the Underworld by Ronald L. Morris and Beneath the Underdog by Charles Mingus , as well as literary works by Kurt Vonnegut and Len Deighton . Hess also wrote Liner Notes a . a. for the compilation Mahalia Jackson ’s Greatest Hits and the Liberian Suite by Duke Ellington . Most recently he lived in Bonzac in southwest France near Bordeaux .
