Jakob von Bauer (born December 19, 1787 in Hirschau , † August 5, 1854 ) was a Bavarian politician. From 1838 until his death he was the first mayor of Munich .

Life

Bauer received his school education in the Benedictine monastery Ensdorf and in Amberg . After graduation, he initially started studying theology at the University of Landshut , but later concentrated on the field of law .

In 1813 he entered the service of the Vilsbiburg Regional Court and later that of the Royal Bavarian State Administration. His activity finally took him to Munich in 1833 via Landshut and Mindelheim . Here he became a commissioner for the Munich-Augsburg railway . Finally, the municipal council of the city of Munich elected him on January 22, 1838 as the first legally qualified mayor.

During his tenure, he laid the south of Munich in the area of today's Flaucher located on the Isar Flaucheranlagen until today one donated by his friends bronze statue recalls in the middle of it.

Bauer saw the consolidation of the ailing city finances as his main task. He even quarreled with King Ludwig I, who built many of his prestige projects at the expense of Munich. Finally, Bauer even wrote a book about the financial and political incapacitation of the citizens, which was promptly banned by the government of Upper Bavaria.

The tomb of Jacob Bauer is on the old southern cemetery in Munich (New Arkadenplatz 174 at cemetery 29) location . The original grave has been lost due to war damage. As a replacement, a memorial plaque was attached to the grave site.
