Kaspar von Steinsdorf (born February 28, 1797 in Amberg ; † November 29, 1879 ) was a lawyer , Munich mayor and member of the Bavarian state parliament .

biography

He was the son of the aristocratic lawyer Markus von Steinsdorf in Amberg. In his hometown he attended high school and then studied law at the University of Landshut .

Kaspar von Steinsdorf then completed an internship at the district courts of Amberg and Munich. In 1821 a lawyer accepted him as a trainee . In 1822/23 he worked as an assessor (accessist) at the district and city court, and in 1826 at the court of appeal in Munich. In April of the same year he was hired by the state as a district and city judicial assessor in Schweinfurt . In 1827 he moved to Munich in the same position, in 1830 as a court advisor to Amberg and in 1832 back to the state capital. On April 19, 1836, Kaspar von Steinsdorf was promoted to secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Justice .

From May 29, 1837 to 1854, von Steinsdorf served as the second mayor of Munich and then rose to the position of first mayor of the capital. He held this office from October 25, 1854 to May 1870. His official position involved him in 1848 in the events surrounding the end of Lola Montez in Munich.

From 1849 to 1854 and from 1859 to 1869 Kaspar von Steinsdorf belonged to the Chamber of Deputies (Landtag). He did not represent any party in the state parliament, but was considered conservative and advocated a Greater German state under the leadership of Austria.

Steinsdorf was a member of the Corps Palatia Munich . In 1840 he became deputy chairman of the Munich Good Shepherd Association , which looked after women in need and was affiliated with the newly introduced Sisters of the Good Shepherd . On January 1, 1854, King Maximilian II awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown .

After his death, Kaspar von Steinsdorf was buried in the old southern cemetery . He received a monumental tomb with his bronze bust in the middle. This was modeled by Michael Wagmüller during his lifetime for the magistrate's hall in the town hall and later cast by Miller. During the Second World War, the tombstone was deliberately destroyed and the bronze bust stolen. It has remained lost to this day and a new, but completely simple bronze plaque has been attached to the grave. The burial site is located under the Neue Arkaden Platz 2 opposite burial ground 28 location .
