Jakob Griesinger (* 1407 in Ulm ; † October 11, 1491 in Bologna ; also Giacomo da Ulma ) was a German glass painter and lay brother of the Dominican Order , who is venerated as a blessed of the Catholic Church.

Life

Pope Leo XII. approves the cult of Blessed Jakob von Ulm (Jakob Griesinger) in the Dominican order and in the diocese of Bologna, Latin decree of the Congregation for Rites, August 3, 1825

Griesinger went to Rome as a pilgrim in 1432 and entered the Dominican monastery in Bologna in 1441 as a lay brother after a time as a mercenary and property manager in Italy, where he worked as an artist until his death.

The Ulm Dominican Felix Fabri says in his writing Sionspilgerin when describing Bologna that his brother's family name was Griesinger . The lay brother was 80 years old and had lived virtuously. He was buried with other brothers, but because of the large number of visitors to his grave, where miracles would also happen, he had to be buried in the church.

Pope Leo XII. in 1825 allowed the Archdiocese of Bologna and the Dominican Order to be mentioned in the Office and at the October 11th Mass. His relics are in the Dominican Church in Bologna.

He is considered the patron saint of glass painters.

Works

Only the stained glass window of the Chapel of the Notaries (or the Holy Cross) in the Basilica of San Petronio , which he created in 1464/66 based on a design by Michele di Matteo, has survived. Its planning and execution is documented in detail by an expenditure book. In his style, German and Italian realism are mixed, said Jacob Burckhardt in his Cicerone (first edition 1855).

Legend

In 1501 a biography written in Italian by his student Ambrosino da Soncino was published in Bologna. It was reproduced in Latin translation in the Acta Sanctorum of October Volume 5.

In 1922 the Dominican Hieronymus Wilms presented an extensive, edifying picture of life in German.
