Jakob Hirsch (born on June 23, 1924 in Halberstadt , died on February 23, 2018 in Jerusalem) was State Secretary at the Israeli State Controller and was active in German-Israeli relations and in helping survivors of the Shoah . In 2013 he was awarded the Cross of Merit on Ribbon for his services to reassessment and reconciliation in German-Israeli relations .

Life

Jakob Hirsch was born in Halberstadt in 1924 and grew up in Berlin-Charlottenburg from 1928 . There he attended the Zionist Theodor Herzl School , directed by Paula Fürst , on Kaiserdamm 78 in Berlin. His parents were also active Zionists as members of the Zionist Association of Germany . In 1935 they managed to emigrate via Trieste on the "Theodor Herzl" to the British Mandate Palestine , where they arrived in Haifa on November 14, 1935 . Jakob Hirsch attended school in Jerusalem . In 1939 he was introduced to the Ḥagam , the youth organization of the Jewish underground organization Hagana , from which the Gadna later emerged. In 1943 he was drafted into the British Army and served during the Second World War until 1946, initially in Egypt and later in Italy . He then continued his law studies , which he had started at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , until 1950. In 1948 he was drafted into the army again to fight in the Israeli army in Israel's War of Independence . From 1955 to 1956 he studied in a postgraduate course at Princeton University .

Career

After graduating, he began a career with the Israeli State Controller of the State of Israel , where he rose to become State Secretary . As director of internal auditing, he was a senior executive at the Israeli bank Leumi .

voluntary work

After his retirement, Jakob Hirsch worked on a voluntary basis in various organizations, including the Board of Trustees of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Be'er Scheva , the Jerusalem Foundation , the Board of Trustees of the Open University, which awarded him an Honorary Fellowship, and the Alyn Children's Hospital Jerusalem .

In 1995, Jakob Hirsch became a board member of the United Restitution Organization , which supports survivors of the Shoah in asserting claims for restitution payments in the network of the Jewish Claims Conference . In 2003, the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation made Jakob Hirsch one of the two chairmen of an independent committee that was supposed to examine applications for compensation for forced labor performed by the Nazis in National Socialist Germany. He was also a board member of the Association of Israelis of Central European Origin ( Hebrew אִרְגּוּן יוֹצְאֵי מֶרְכַּז אֵירוֹפָּה Irgūn Jōtz'ej Merkaz Ejrōpah , German 'Organization of those from Central Europe' ). As head of the Solidarity Work, he campaigned for the support of poorer members of the association. He was Chairman of the Board of the Association of Umbrella Organizations for Associations of Former Jewish Germans in the USA, Great Britain and Israel.

Until 2011, Jakob Hirsch was also the chairman of the Israeli circle of friends of the German Action Reconciliation Service for Peace , which significantly supports the work of ARSP in Israel. As a contemporary witness, he repeatedly appeared in front of young people in Israel and Germany. Hirsch supported the Stolperstein initiative and initiatives to commemorate Jewish life in Halberstadt as well as the Jewish self-help organization AMCHA Germany to provide psychosocial support for needy Holocaust survivors and their families in Israel.

Jakob Hirsch died on February 23, 2018 in Jerusalem .
