Jakob Wilhelm Roux

Jakob Wilhelm Christian Roux (born April 13, 1771 in Jena , † August 22, 1830 in Heidelberg ) was a German painter and draftsman. His full name was Jakob Wilhelm Christian Roux.

Life

Roux came from an old Huguenot family; his father was the fencing master Heinrich Friedrich Roux and his wife Johanna Magdalena Bittermann. In 1791 Roux began to study mathematics at the University of Jena ; But soon he was only interested in painting. Roux received his first artistic lessons at the University of Christian Gotthilf Immanuel Oehme (1759-1832), where he learned "anatomical drawing".

With the support of Oehme, Roux made the acquaintance of Justus Christian Loder , with whom an interesting collaboration developed. In the years 1797 to 1803 Roux was significantly involved in the illustration of Loder's "Tabulae anatomicae" and thus he was also able to make a name for himself as an artist. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Justin Bertuch held him in high regard as an artist.

In 1801 Roux married Pauline Johanna Heyligenstädt in Jena; with her he had two daughters and a son. The daughter Emelie married the lawyer Ludwig Löw von und zu Steinfurth .

As a master student of the painter Johann Christian Klengel , Roux became a very sought-after portraitist over time . 1806 doctorate Roux in Jena Dr. phil. and in 1813 he was entrusted there with a teaching position, which a short time later was extended to a "position for life". From 1805 to 1808 he taught the painter Louise Seidler in pastel painting.

His wife died in 1823 and two years later Roux married Charlotte Mariana Wippermann in Heidelberg. With her he had two sons, including the later painter Karl Roux .

Jakob Wilhelm Roux died in Heidelberg on August 22, 1830 at the age of 59.
