Jakow Perelman

Yakov Perelman ( Russian Яков Исидорович Перельман ; born November 22 . Jul / 4. December  1882 greg. In Białystok ; † 16th March 1942 in Leningrad ) was a Russian scientist , journalist and author.

Life

Perelman grew up in what was then the Grodno Governorate of the Russian Empire. Together with his brother, he began studying at the Petersburg Forest Institute. During his studies he worked as a proofreader at a publishing house and began to deal with the journalistic presentation of the natural sciences . From 1901 he worked for the magazine Priroda i ljudi ( Nature and People ). In 1904 he became editor-in-chief . After a long break in his studies due to illness , he finished it in 1909 as a qualified forester.

However, he never worked in this professional field, but dedicated himself to the activity as an author and teacher . In the first six years after the October Revolution, he was a lecturer in physics and mathematics at various institutes and wrote 18 school books . In 1915 Jakow Perelman married the doctor Anna Kaminskaja.

In 1917 he worked as the executive director of the “Special Conference on Fuels” and proposed that clocks in Russia be put forward for an hour in order to save energy, which was adopted as law. After that, Perelman served as an inspector of the Ministry of People's Education of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and worked out curricula and materials for physics and mathematics classes. With Nadeschda Krupskaja he founded the popular science magazine W masterskoi prirody ( In the workshop of nature ) and worked there as an editor until 1927.

After the start of World War II, he gave lectures on the air defense and air defense and was as an instructor during the Leningrad blockade operates. After his son fell, his wife died in early 1942. He himself succumbed to privation on March 16 of the same year.

In total, he wrote over 100 books, which had 400 editions in the Soviet Union alone and over 13 million copies were printed. He translated 18 books into English and 15 into German.

One of his books is the non-fiction book "Занимательная Алгебра" (Entertaining Algebra), which was published in 1959 by the State Publishing House for Physical and Mathematical Literature in Moscow. The book was translated by Ludwig Müller from Brandenburg and was published in 1965 by the publisher “ Volk und Wissen Volkseigener Verlag Berlin ”. The retail sales price (EPP) was 4.65 MDN.

The 9 chapters with interesting arithmetic problems as well as the cover were illustrated with graphics by Harri Parschau . The textbook was suitable as accompanying teaching material in mathematics from about 7th to 12th grade.
