description

Vegetative characteristics

Jaltomata leivae is a semi-shrub or shrub that grows often similar to other plants and then up to 2.5 m reached a size of. The young stems are angled, green and initially covered with simple or branched trichomes , later balding. The woody branches can be up to 2 cm thick at the base, their cross-section is almost round, they are brown, covered with cork warts and hairless.

The leaves are alternate, often in pairs. The leaf stalks are up to 17 mm long. The leaf blade is membranous, ovate to elliptical and is up to 11 cm long and 5.3 cm wide. Both sides of the leaf blade are balding, simple and branched trichomes are found on young leaves. Towards the front, the leaf blade is pointed and slightly narrowed at the base, the margin is entire and on older leaves slightly ciliate.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescences , which usually consist of two, rarely one or three flowers , stand in the armpits. The inflorescence stalk is 1 to 9 mm long and green in color, on it are the 10 to 14 mm long flower stalks . Both peduncle and peduncle have a rotating cross-section and are weakly to densely covered with simple and branched trichomes. The flowers buds have a dome-shaped tip, the cross-section is round.

The calyx is green in color and bent back when it blooms. Its diameter is 15 mm, the calyx lobes are triangular. The inside is hairless, but covered with abundant glands, the outside is densely covered with mostly tree-like branched, more rarely with simple or forked trichomes and with glands. The edge of the calyx is ciliate. The crown is urn-shaped, the corolla tube is 7 to 9 mm wide and 10 mm long at the base, the coronet is completely bent back, measures 14 mm in diameter and has 10 corolla lobes, the edge is ciliate. The color of the crown is bright red-violet at the base and changes to a light blue-violet to cream-colored shade towards the edge. The inside of the corolla tube is hairless, at the base a red nectar collects in five pits . The outside is covered with branched and simple trichomes on the veins. There are plenty of glands on the corolla lobes, on the inside of the coronary margin there are 0.2-0.3 mm long, simple trichomes, the topmost cell of which is thickened.

The stamens are 11 to 14 mm long, the stamens are creamy yellow and 20 to 25% of the length with simple, non-pigmented trichomes. The anthers are about 6 to 7 mm beyond the crown. They are yellow in color before opening and 1.9 to 3 mm long. They are occasionally hairy near the fusion of the two theca. The green colored stylus is 9 to 18 mm long and has a few, approximately 0.06 mm long trichomes at the tip. The slightly two-lobed and head-shaped scar is dark green and 0.4 mm in size. It is located about 5.5 mm in front of the anthers and 12 mm in front of the opening of the crown. The scar is covered with papillae , these are about 25 to 30 µm long. The flower base is wide and encloses the base of the ovary .

fruit

When the fruit ripens, the calyx enlarges to a diameter of 26 mm. The fruits are almost spherical, pale orange berries that can reach a diameter of 16 mm. Up to 168 seeds were counted in one fruit. The seeds are almost triangular to kidney-shaped, indented and pitted. They measure 1.59 to 1.8 × 1.23 to 1.47 × 0.42 to 0.48 mm.

Occurrence

The species is only known from one location in Peru , from the province of Cajamarca and the province of Contumazá . It grows there above the city of Guzmango in a gorge near a river at an altitude between 2560 and 2650 m.
