James DePreist
James A (nderson) DePreist (born November 21, 1936 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † February 8, 2013 in New York City , New York , according to other information in Scottsdale , Arizona ) was an American conductor and music teacher .
Life
DePreist studied composition with Vincent Persichetti at the University of Pennsylvania until 1961 and then composition at the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music . He first began a career as a jazz musician ; with his Jimmy DePreist Quintet , he went on a tour of the Middle East and the Far East with the support of the State Department . On the trip to Bangkok in 1962, he fell ill with polio, but shortly afterwards he won first prize at the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Music Competition . From 1965 to 1966 he was assistant to conductor Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra .
In 1969 he made his European debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orkest . In 1971 Antal Doráti invited him to join the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington as Associate Conductor . He then worked as conductor of the Orchester symphonique de Québec , the Malmö Symphony and for 23 years the Oregon Symphony Orchestra . As a guest conductor he was a. a. in Amsterdam, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Manchester, Melbourne, Munich, Prague, Rome, Rotterdam, Seoul, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Tokyo and Vienna. From 2005 to 2008 he was chief conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra . In total, he made more than 50 recordings. In 2003 he was nominated for a Grammy .
In 1987 DePreist conducted the orchestra of the Juilliard School of Music in a performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with violinist Gil Shaham . In 1992 DePreist was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 2004 to 2011 he was director (then emeritus) of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at the Juilliard School. In 2005 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts . DePreist is a nephew of the opera singer Marian Anderson .
