Jan Baculewski

Jan Baculewski (born August 29, 1912 in Orenburg , Russian Empire , † October 27, 1994 in Warsaw ) was a Polish literary historian and educator who dealt scientifically with Polish literature of the 19th century.

Life

Baculewski was born in Orenburg in 1912 as the son of a political exile . After the death of his father in 1922 he was repatriated with his family and lived in Warsaw. From 1927 he attended grammar school there and graduated from high school in 1932 . During his school days he took part in propaganda campaigns by the Polish Socialist Party . He then studied Polish Studies from 1932 to 1937 at the University of Warsaw . In addition, he taught at vocational schools from 1933.

During the German occupation of Poland , he gave lessons and led a professional school theater group in the Warsaw Underground. Politically, he was initially associated with the underground organization Wolność, Równość, Niepodległość; In 1943 he joined the Polish Workers' Party . In September 1944 he was arrested in Międzylesie , but managed to escape and came to Nowy Targ .

After the Second World War he returned to Warsaw and was the director of a self-established high school. He also worked in the central administration of Związek Nauczycielstwa Polskiego . In 1947 he worked with the magazines Kuźnica and Wieś . In 1947 he also gave lectures at the University of Łódź . At the Institute for Literary Research in Warsaw, he was deputy director from 1948 to 1953 and then head of the working group for the period of positivism until 1961. At the University of Warsaw he taught literary history from 1948 and was director of the library of the University of Warsaw from 1956 to 1982. For the Państowy Instytut Wydawniczy he worked from 1948 to 1960. With the work Poezja programowa pierwszego dziesięciolecia po powstaniu styczniowym ( doctoral supervisor : Stefan Żółkiewski ) he received his doctorate in 1961 at the Institute for Literary Research.
