Johannes Brugman (also Brugmann , Brugmanus ; * around 1400 in Kempen ; † October 19, 1473 in Nijmegen ) was a Franciscan and popular preacher on the Lower Rhine.

Life

His place of birth is not known for certain, it is very likely that he comes from Kempen or probably the Archdiocese of Cologne . Brugman studied in Paris theology . After completing his studies, he went to the Monastery of the Franciscan Observants in Saint Omer in the County of Artois , where he became lecturer of theology.

He was considered a capable preacher and is remembered primarily for his preaching trips, on which, as a penitential preacher, he wanted to convert many people to a renewed Christian life. These began in the Rhineland and Westphalia and reached their climax around 1452 in the IJssel valley .

Brugman was a writer who wrote some spiritual songs (such as "Ic heb ghejaecht mijn leven lanc") and a vita of St.  Lidwina von Schiedam . The latter appeared in three versions between 1433 and 1456. He also wrote in Latin reflections on the life of Jesus Christ and treatises on the reform of the Franciscan order ( Speculum Imperfectionis ). His sermons have only survived in fragments.

There is a general relationship in the understanding and exercises of piety between Brugman's work and the founders and authors of the Devotio moderna . He promoted the reform efforts of the stricter observance in his order province, the Cologne Franciscan province .
