Jan "Janne" Sjöström (born April 10, 1948 in Härnösand ) is a Swedish former football player . The striker made eight international appearances for the Swedish national team .

Career

Sjöström began playing football at Sandåkerns SK , for whom he made his debut at the age of 14 in the second-rate Division II Norra . After several years he moved to IFK Göteborg , where he played for three years and made his debut in the Allsvenskan .

In 1969 Sjöström enrolled in the Stockholm Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan as a student. As a result, he was looking for a local club and joined the second division Hammarby IF . There he immediately established himself as a core force in attack and contributed to achieving the season win with eight goals this season in 17 games this season alongside Ronnie Hellström , Kenneth Ohlsson and Björn Löf . In the subsequent round of promotion to Allsvenskan, he was also successful in the game against Helsingborgs IF as a goal scorer and rose with the team. In the 1970 season he was one of the guarantors of relegation, which clearly succeeded as fifth in the table. With twelve goals this season, he also placed second on the top scorers list behind Bo Larsson from Master Malmö FF . In the following seasons less dangerous, the team occupied the last non-relegation place. Nevertheless, he had played his way into the national team and came to his first national team appearance in April 1972 in the game against Switzerland .

In the 1973 season , Sjöström became a hero at his club when he scored a total of five goals in the local derbies with AIK and Djurgårdens IF . In the following seasons he was again crowned the best internal shooter. With eleven and ten goals this season, respectively, he placed himself in front of his offensive team- mates Mats Werner , Kenneth and Billy Ohlsson and was thus instrumental in keeping the team coached by Björn Bolling in the league. During this time he was also used irregularly in the national team, but missed participation in the 1974 World Cup . After eight missions without a personal goal he was no longer considered from September 1974. In the autumn he and his club played a friendly against New York Cosmos , in which he stole the show from two-time goalscorer Pelé with three goals.

In the following seasons Sjöström was increasingly prone to injury. Although he still scored more than five goals this season, he could no longer build on his previous goal threat. After the fourth operation on his knee, he ended his active career after ten seasons for Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan at the end of the 1979 season . As a result, he concentrated on his work as a sports teacher, but also worked in the amateur field as a trainer. He later worked as a taxi driver.
