Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman (politician)

Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman (born October 1, 1815 in Norden ; † April 17, 1889 there ) was an entrepreneur, pomologist and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

ten Doornkaat was the son of Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman , the founder of Doornkaat . Up to the age of 16 he attended the Latin school in the north and then started an apprenticeship with a local bookbinder . After completing his apprenticeship, he joined his father's distillery business at the age of 20, which he took over with his brother Fiepko ten Doornkaat Koolman in 1846 and has since continued under the company name Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman Söhne . He had previously dealt with agriculture and pomology and traveled as a committee member of the German Pomologists Association. He was editor of the Pomological Notes and the comprehensive East Frisian dictionary . He was also a member of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde zu Leiden . ten Doornkaat was senator from 1850 to 1856 and later mayor of the city of Norden.

Between 1857 and 1867 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and from 1869 to 1871 of the North German Reichstag . From 1877 until his resignation in August 1879 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the National Liberal Party and the constituency of the Province of Hanover 1 ( Emden , Leer , Norden).
