Janowice ( German  Janowitz ) is a village with a Schulzenamt of the municipality of Bestwina in the Powiat Bielski of the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

geography

Janowice is located in the Auschwitz Basin ( Kotlina Oświęcimska ), about 40 km south of Katowice in the Powiat (district) Bielsko-Biała.

The village has an area of ​​709 ha .

Neighboring towns are Bestwina in the north-west, Stara Wieś in the north-east, Pisarzowice in the east and the city of Bielsko-Biała in the south ( Komorowice Krakowskie and Hałcnów ).

history

The village emerged as a forest settlement in the 15th century. In 1581 the village had several ponds. On maps from 1603 it was Iankowicze and 1724 Keizer forest called. The name is patronymically derived from the first name Jan with the typical patronymic word ending - (ow) ice.

When Poland was first partitioned , Janowice became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire in 1772 (from 1804).

After the abolition of patrimonial it formed a municipality in the district and judicial district of Biała from 1850 .

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Janowice came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the district of Bielitz in the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 province of Upper Silesia ).

From 1975 to 1998 Janowice was part of the Katowice Voivodeship . From 1977 to 1982 it belonged to the town of Czechowice-Dziedzice with the municipality of Bestwina .

A Roman Catholic parish was established in 1983.
