The Japanese wax bell ( Kirengeshoma palmata ), Chinese黄山梅, Huángshan méi , is one of two species of plants in the genus Kirengeshoma , which belongs to the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae).

description

The Japanese wax bell is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 60 to 80, sometimes up to 120 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The opposite leaves are large and round. The leaf blade is lobed to split, its base is heart-shaped . The lower and middle leaves are petiolate, the upper sessile.

The flowering time is in August and September. The flowers are nodding and arranged on long stalks in loose, little-flowered umbels at the end of the shoots protruding from the leaves. There are five sepals. The five petals are light yellow or waxy yellow, thick and 2.5 to 3.5 (rarely up to 4) centimeters long. There are 15 stamens. The stylus are free.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54.

The Japanese wax bell is native to the humid mountain forests of Japan ( Shikoku , Kyushu , Kii Peninsula ) and China (southern Anhui Province , northwestern Zhejiang ). The mountain Tsurugi-san ( 剣 山 ) on the Japanese island of Shikoku and the Chinese mountains Huang Shan , where the Japanese wax bell grows at altitudes of 700 to 1800 meters, are known for their Kirengeshoma deposits .

use

In Europe it is rarely used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees and requires partially shaded, fresh, humus-rich locations. It has been in culture since 1890 at the latest.
