Jaroslav Fragner (born December 25, 1898 in Prague , † January 3, 1967 there ) was a Czech architect of functionalism .

Life

Fragner studied at the Czech Technical University in Prague from 1917 to 1922 . In 1923 he joined the avant-garde group Devětsil . His first realized project was the pavilion of the infant ward of the Mukačevo hospital in 1928 . In 1927 he provided plans for a garden city in Barrandov , which were not implemented. In 1928 the construction of the high school in Český Těšín began .

The cities of Kolín and Prague were among the main focuses of his work . In Kolín he designed the thermal power station built in 1932 for ESSO, a two-story sales pavilion for the Tatra company and residential buildings. On the basis of a Barrandov design, he designed garden city settlements in Kostelec nad Černými Lesy and Nespeky between 1931 and 1933 . In 1931 Fragner joined the Mánes artists' association. From 1934 to 1935 he continued his studies with Josef Gočár at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague . He then went on a study trip to the United States in 1935 with Adolf Hoffmeister . Together with Vincenc Makovský he created a fountain in Mělník in 1937 and in the following years four monuments to Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in Olomouc , Libochovice , Brno and Bystřice nad Pernštejnem . In 1938 he built the Merkur insurance headquarters in Prague. Between 1940 and 1944 the ESSO administration building in Kolín was built according to his plans.

Since the end of the 1930s, he put his new focus on the restoration of historical monuments. He worked at the Prague Castle and, after the Second World War, led the reconstruction of the Prague Collegium Carolinum and from 1949 to 1953 the reconstruction of the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague's old town . From 1949 he taught as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. From 1949 Fragner also worked for the large state project planning company Stavoprojekt.

Not far from the Bethlehem Chapel, the architect is honored by the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery.
