Javier Artiñano

Javier Artiñano Ansorena (* 1942 in Montes de Oca , San José , Costa Rica ; † July 4, 2013 in Madrid ) was an award-winning Spanish costume and set designer who worked for over 50 films between 1971 and 2011.

Life

Javier Artiñano Ansorena was born in Costa Rica in 1942. His parents were Spanish immigrants. At the age of six the family returned to Spain. Artiñano attended high school in the city of Santander , graduated from high school there and then moved to the capital, where he attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and then studied at the College of Arts.

In 1968 he joined the Los Goliardos theater group , where he made his first professional stage work. In 1971 he designed the costumes for the director Rafael Moreno Albadie for his film Las melancólicas with Analía Gadé and Francisco Rabal in the leading roles. In 1974 he worked for Pedro Masó's romantic comedy Una chica y un señor with Ornella Muti and Sergio Fantoni . In the same year he worked for Josefina Molina's drama Vera, un cuento cruel . In 1975 he created the costumes for the television series El pícaro and El quinto jinete . The director Mario Camus engaged him in 1978 for his film drama Los días del pasado . In 1979 Gillo Pontecorvo engaged him for his period film Operación Ogro with the cast of Gian Maria Volonté , José Sacristán and Ángela Molina .

In the 1980s and 1990s he had his most productive phase with 33 film engagements. In his 40-year career he has worked with many well-known Spanish and international directors, including Luis García Berlanga , Mariano García, Antonio José Betancor, Fernando Colomo, Benito Rabal, Jaime Camino, José A. Zorrilla, José Luis Cuerda , Antonio Giménez Rico , Xavier Villaverde , Imanol Uribe, Pedro Olea , Pilar Miró , Jean Delannoy , Jaime de Armiñán, Vicente Aranda , Fernando Fernán Gómez , Antonio Mercero, Antonio José Betancor, Daniel Monzón and Antonio del Real.

During his career he won six Goya Awards and was nominated six other times. In 2010 he won the award at the Málaga Film Festival Español.

Artiñano had to withdraw from the film business because of cancer. He died in Madrid in July 2013 at the age of 71.
