Jay Timothy Herford (born August 22, 1987 in Crofton , Maryland ) is an American football goalkeeper who has been in the squad of Crystal Palace Baltimore since 2010 . After the end of the 2010 game year, the cooperation between the English parent club Crystal Palace and the US franchise came to an end because the English ran into financial bottlenecks. Because of the situation there, the Americans took a break that had previously only been set for one season. A start in the new NASL is aimed for in 2012; During this time, Herford remains in the franchise's squad without a job.

He played his only professional game so far on August 12, 2009, where, ironically, he was not used as a goalkeeper, but instead appeared as a striker .

Since 2010 Herford has also been a goalkeeper coach for the football team of the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays , the sports department of Johns Hopkins University .

Player career

Career start at home

Herford was born in 1987 to Edward Herford and Mary Ann Perret in the city of Crofton in the US state of Maryland, which has existed since 1964. After elementary school and junior high, both of which he completed in his home region, it took him to South River High School in Edgewater, Maryland , which is, however, part of Herford's hometown of Crofton. There he received three Varsity Letters over the years and in his senior year was elected to the All-County First Team by the Baltimore Sun and the Washington Post, among others . Within his home state, after graduating from high school in 2005, he moved to Frostburg State University , where he took a major in marketing and joined the football team of the university's own sports department, the Frostburg Bobcats . In his freshman year, still a constant replacement, he made only two championship appearances in this first year of play. He made his debut in a clear 8-0 victory over the team from Mt. Aloysius College , where he replaced Bryn Varhol in the goal of Frostburg in one half of the game. The game, in which the Frostburg Bobcats took 43 shots and Mt. Aloysius College only recorded a single shot in the entire course of the game, should not remain the only use for Herford. About a month later he got another half-hour short assignment in a 4-0 win over Hilbert College . This ended the 2005 game year for him before he made several appearances in the following year. In 2006 he played eight championship games, of which he guarded the goal of his team in six games from the start. In the following two years Herford became a regular in the goal of the Bobcats, who also accompanied the team when they completed the title game in the " Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region". Furthermore, he received a special honor from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for his performance . In his senior year, Jay Herford received other honors, including an All Conference Second Team honor, after he ended the season with the second fewest conceded goals on average. All in all, he was honored twice as "All-Allegheny-Mountain-Collegiate-Conference-Goalkeeper" during his studies and led the team as team captain for two years .

First attempts in professional football

After the end of his time at Frostburg State University, Herford remained without a club for a while, before he joined the Harrisburg City Islanders in April 2009 with play in the USL Second Division , which was considered to be third-class at the time . There the goalkeeper was not able to convince and was mostly only the third goalkeeper in the squad behind Chase Harrison and Tomer Chencinski . Nevertheless, he still made his professional debut this season when he was ironically not used as a goalkeeper, but as a striker on August 12, 2009 in a 2-1 loss to the Western Mass Pioneers shortly before the end of the game, and from the 88th minute of the game replaced the experienced defender Dustin Bixler . This was also the only professional appearance that Jay Herford was able to record this season. In the following year, the trained goalkeeper changed clubs again and joined the Crystal Palace Baltimore franchise in the summer of 2010 , where he was initially only intended to replace the 1-man goalkeeper Evan Bush . With the team he played in the USSF Division 2 Professional League , which was only played this season, and was only in five games as the second goalkeeper in the squad. The rest of the games he was mostly not in the squad or was replaced by Chase Harrison, who also moved to Baltimore, or Mark Murphy . After the ties to the English parent club Crystal Palace broke due to financial problems , those responsible for the US franchise decided to suspend the team for a season and, however, aimed at a restart in the new NASL in 2012. During this time, Herford remains in the franchise's squad without a job, although he is free to look for a new club. In January 2011, he briefly joined the USL Men's Player Combine , which was held at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston , South Carolina . In March 2011, he went to the Harrisburg City Islanders training camp for the third year in a row, although he was unable to convince in 2010 and was now hoping for his luck in 2011.

Coaching career

In 2010 he was brought up as a goalkeeping coach in the men's soccer team of the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays , the sports department of Johns Hopkins University . There he sporadically supported Stephen King, the goalkeeping coach of the university's own women's soccer team. The men had 15 wins, four losses and three draws over the entire season. Herford also continued his work as goalkeeping coach for the university team for the 2011 season.
