Jean-Marie Manatawai

Jean-Marie Léyé Lenelcau Manatawai (* 1932 in Aneityum Island; † December 9, 2014 ) was a politician and President of Vanuatu .

After attending French schools, he was elected President of the local council on his home island in 1957. In this position he promoted the independence of his country, which received the British-French condominium in 1980. In the meantime Manatawai was promoted to director of the airline "Air Vanuatu".

As Vice-President of the Francophone Union of Moderate Parties (UMP), he was elected to the Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1983.

From March 2, 1994 to March 2, 1999, he was the successor to Frederick Karlomuana Timakata and the incumbent President Alfred Maseng Nalo President of Vanuatu. In November 1997, after two years of political instability and stagnation, he dissolved the Legislative Assembly and at the same time called new elections that brought Donald Kalpokas to power as Prime Minister in March 1998 .
