Life

Bani, an Anglican priest , began his political commitment in the 1970s when he formed the New Hebridean Cultural Association (NHCA), which was still part of the New Hebrides National Party in 1971, together with the also Anglican clergy Walter Hadye Lini and Donald Kalpokas (NHNP) and finally in 1977 the current name Vanua'aku Pati (VP) was given. In the first ballot for the election of a new president in the Vanuatu Parliament on March 17, 1999, none of the candidates received the necessary two-thirds majority of the electoral college, which consisted of the 49 members of parliament and the heads of the provincial councils of the six provinces of Vanuatu . While candidate Hosea Bani, backed by Prime Minister Donald Kalpokas' government , received 28 votes, opposition candidate Hary Tevi received 22 votes. In a second ballot, John Bennett Bani received 43 votes and thus the necessary two-thirds majority. Only the National United Party (NUP), founded in 1991 by Walter Hadye Lini, who died shortly before the election on February 21, 1999 and now led by his brother Ham Lini , voted against Bani.
