Jean Bessems (born January 4, 1945 in Cadier en Keer , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch carom player in the disciplines of cadre and billiard artistique (art kick).

biography

Jean Bessems was born in Cadier en Keer, a district of Margraten , now Eijsden-Margraten . His father was a farmer, pigeon fancier and later a café owner. He started playing billiards at the age of 14. He played soccer until he was 19 and then had to choose between billiards and soccer. Bessems initially played a free game , but later switched to the art kick and cadre.

Bessems made his international breakthrough in 1965 at the European Youth Billiards Championship. At the Cadre 47/2 European Championship in Nice in 1971 , he won his first men's silver medal. He played against well-known billiards players like Raymond Ceulemans , Henk Scholte , Hans Vultink , Francis Connesson and Emile Wafflard . He traveled all over the world and even gave exhibition fights in Russia, which was special at the time of the Soviet Empire. According to his trainer René Vingerhoedt , his strength lay mainly in perfect defense (defensive play), which is important in order to become a top player.

He was world champion in Sluis in Zeeland in 1985 and in Stockerau in Austria in 1988 and European champion in Bruay Sur Escaut in France, in Dongen and Gorsel in the Netherlands and in Wilrijk near Antwerp. In 1991 he ended his sporting career and in 2005 he took early retirement (Dutch: VUT).

Others

His main occupation was a mechanical engineer. Like his father, he was a passionate pigeon fancier for twenty years.
