Jean Louis (Ludwig) Sponsel (born November 8, 1858 in Hanau ; † January 10, 1930 in Dresden ) was a German art historian and museum director.

Life

Sponsel studied art history and classical archeology in Berlin, Munich and Bonn. In 1887 he was in Leipzig in art history at Anton Springer with a dissertation on Joachim von Sandrart the noble building, image and painting arts Teutsche Academy doctorate . By Karl Woermann he was appointed as assistant at the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden called, where he, among others, the history of the artistic poster employed and thereby expanded the collection and working field of the Print Room. In addition, he was primarily interested in architecture and building history . In 1892 he published a large volume on the Dresden Frauenkirche and in 1896 on the former abbey church in Amorbach .

Sponsel completed his habilitation in 1898 and then worked at the TH Dresden as a private lecturer for the history of architecture and the arts and crafts . From 1902 to 1908 he taught as an associate professor for the history of architecture and the arts and crafts at the university. In 1905 he was also director of the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden.

In 1908 Sponsel became director of the Dresden Museum of Applied Arts , the History Museum and the Coin Cabinet, and from 1914 to 1923 he was director of the Green Vault . The special exhibition room in the Green Vault, which was inaugurated in 2005, was named after him in his honor.

Sponsel's scientific estate is in the main state archive in Dresden . He is buried in the Tolkewitz urn grove .

Sponsel was a member of the Corps Normannia Berlin , Suevia Munich (1883) and Rhenania Bonn (1884), which he had helped to reconstitute. In 1892 he was one of the co-founders of the Old Men Seniors Convent Dresden. As chairman of the Association of Old Corps Students (1905–1909) he was committed to a congress hall and an archive building for the Kosen Seniors Convent Association in Kösen . However, the project and plans by the architect Wilhelm Kreis were discarded for reasons of profitability.
