Jean Métellus

Jean Metellus (* 30th April 1937 in Jacmel , Sud-Est Department , Haiti ; † 4. January 2014 in Bonneuil-sur-Marne , Département Val-de-Marne , France ) was a Haitian doctor , novel writer , poet and playwright who went into exile during the dictatorial rule of François Duvalier and, as a representative of French-Caribbean literature in Haiti, received the Grand Prix de la Francophonie of the Académie française in 2010 . His book La famille Vortex was included in the UNESCO collection of representative works .

Life

Jean Métellus worked as a math teacher at the Lycée Célia Lamour in his native Jacmel and went into exile in France at the beginning of the dictatorial rule of François Duvalier in 1959 . There he began a study of subjects Physics , Chemistry and Biology at the Faculty of the University of Paris and after a study of medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Paris, which he in 1970 with a doctor of medicine in the field of neurology with completed a dissertation on aphasia with the title Contribution à l'étude du jargon phonémique et de la désintégration phonétique dans l'aphasie . He then worked as a general practitioner at various hospitals in Paris and also wrote numerous articles for medical journals . He also completed postgraduate studies in linguistics at the University of Paris III , which he completed in 1975 with a doctorate in linguistics.

In the following years he continued to work as a doctor, but also as a lecturer and lecturer at numerous higher education institutions such as the Institute for Linguistic and Phonetic Studies (Institut des Études Linguistiques et Phonétiques) belonging to the University of Paris III and at the nursing school of the Hôpital Albert-Chenevier . Between 1993 and 1995 he organized various lecture events at the Hôpital Emile Roux .

He has written numerous volumes of poetry, novels and plays and, as a representative of French-Caribbean literature in Haiti, received the Grand Prix de la Francophonie of the Académie française in 2010 . His book La famille Vortex was included in the UNESCO collection of representative works .

Métellus was married to Anne-Marie. After his death he was buried in the Cimetière du Père Lachaise , the largest cemetery in Paris.
