Jean Lyndsay Torren Marsh , OBE (born July 1, 1934 in the London Borough of Hackney , England ) is a British film and stage actress and screenwriter .

Life

Jean Marsh grew up in a middle class family . Her father was a sales representative and her mother an outfitter for a small theater. Marsh was on stage at a young age and occasionally worked as a photo model as a teenager . She studied acting as an adult and made her debut as an actress in 1953 with the British crime film The Limping Man .

In 1959 she moved to the United States for almost three years , where she appeared in John Gielgud's adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing on Broadway in September of the same year . In the US, however, it had only moderate success. The monumental film Cleopatra , produced in 1963 and in which Marsh played a supporting role, is one of her best-known films at the time . From the 1960s she appeared in guest roles in numerous well-known television series such as Simon Templar or Die 2 , later in The Waltons (1977), Hawaii Five-Zero (1978) or in Mord ist ihr Hobby (1993). The housemaid Rose in the British television series Das Haus am Eaton Place , produced from 1971 onwards , was probably her best-known role internationally. She came up with the idea for this series herself together with her colleague Eileen Atkins . In 1971 she received an Emmy Award for her acting . She was nominated for the Golden Globe twice, in 1975 and 1977 .

As a film actress, Marsh first became known to a wider audience through her role as the evil Queen Bavmorda in the 1988 fantasy film Willow , a role for which she was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In June 2012, Marsh was inducted into the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II . She was single for most of her life. On April 2, 1955, the then 21-year-old married the then 36-year-old actor Jon Pertwee . The marriage was divorced on August 8, 1960. She never married again and also remained childless.

Marsh lives in the rural parish of Boxford in West Berkshire, UK .
