Rusch did a craft vocational training and has been working as a freelance artist since 1972. From 1979 to 1982 he studied as a master student with the painter and graphic artist Eberhard Schlotter in Altea in Spain, mainly etching techniques . In addition to his studio in Brunsbüttel in northern Germany, Rusch also frequently works in Spain. There he had a second studio until 1998 in the eastern Spanish province of Alicante in the mountain village of Callosa de Ensarriá on the Costa Blanca , where he is still working temporarily.

In the early 2000s, Rusch survived cancer , which shaped his further artistic development. For example, since 2004 he has been organizing the “ Wattolümpiade ” as a benefit event for the Schleswig-Holstein Cancer Society.

Rusch illustrated, among others, Theodor Storms Schimmelreiter , Goethe's Faust , Arno Schmidt's School of Atheists and the Carmina Burana . His Schimmelreiter illustrations were adopted by six school book publishers; they also appeared in an English textbook edition and in a Korean licensed edition. At a public presentation of the Korean edition of the Schimmelreiter in Brunsbüttel, Gerd Eversberg from the Husum Theodor Storm Society praised the artist's commitment:

“Her realistic illustrations give Korean readers a fair idea of the landscape and life on the west coast; they thus complement the struggles of the coastal inhabitants against the eternal forces of nature, described by Theodor Storm. You have made an important contribution to conveying our cultural heritage to the Asian region. There people who are interested in German culture like to read novellas and poems by Theodor Storm. "

His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, including in Colombia and Romania .

Painting "Wackener Weltkuh". Oil on canvas 110 × 150 cm. From the cycle W: O * ART.
