Jequitinhonha , officially Portuguese Município de Jequitinhonha , is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Minas Gerais . It is about 677 km away from the state capital Belo Horizonte . The population was estimated at 25,305 inhabitants in 2018 , who are called Jequitinhonhens ( jequitinhonhenses in Portuguese ). The population density is 6.9 people per km², the area is 3514.2 km² (2017).

geography

Jequitinhonha is located at a height of 220 meters in Vale do Jequitinhonha on the Rio Jequitinhonha river of the same name in the northeast of the state. The highest point is the Pedra Aguda at 1151 meters , the lowest point at 208 meters is the Foz Córrego São Simão .

Mata Escura nature reserve

The landscape is dominated by the 50,900 hectare reserve Reserva Biológica da Mata Escura , in which the biome of the Mata Atlântica is protected.

There is a tropical savanna climate, according to the Köppen and Geiger Aw climate classification . The average rainfall is 877 mm, the average temperature is 22.1 ° C.

history

Jequitinhonha was founded in 1811 and borders the municipalities of Joaíma , Felisburgo , Rubim , Almenara , Pedra Azul and Ponto dos Volantes .

Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied and Joachim Quäck

From 1815 to 1817 the German explorer Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied toured the area, he was accompanied by the native Indian Joachim Quäck (Portuguese: Kuêk). The German town of Neuwied and Jeguitinhonha have a common history through Quäck, which the association “Associação Amizade Neuwied-Jequitinhonha - ANEJE” wants to maintain.

City administration

The municipality is divided into three districts: Distrito da Sede , which is the urban seat, the Distrito de São Pedro do Jequitinhonha and the Distrito de Guaranilândia .

For the executive, Roberto Botelhom, member of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), was elected city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020 in the 2016 local elections.

Population development

Source: IBGE (2018 figures are only estimates). According to the 2010 census, 27.22% of the population were children and adolescents up to the age of 15. The population has grown only slightly since the 1990s.

economy

The economy is characterized by cattle breeding and the cultivation of coffee, sugar cane and corn.
